Chronic Heart Failure and Disability Update

After a prolonged hiatus, I have begun posting again to this website. In preparation for an upcoming discussion of the most recently revised Cardiovascular Listings, I've updated the "Chronic Heart Failure and Disability" article in the "General Articles" section to reflect some of these revisions. Thanks to all of you who sent encouraging emails to get this rolling again.

Thanks you so much for this information.
I am 52 years old and have been treated with meds for CHF, Idiopathic DCM, LBBB, and severe Mitral Regurgitation since 2005. My EF has fluctuated from 22% to 35% until recently it was 19% and an AICD was implanted with complicated 5 hour surgery. Soon thereafter the lead wire in the left ventricle had to be turned off due to overstimulation of the phrenic nerve so now I only have the defibrillator functioning. I still take the meds and have all of the symptoms of CHF- Stage 3/4 ,Cardiomyopathy, and Left Ventricular Dysfunction.
All along this process I have been denied Social Security and now am awaiting a date for a hearing. At times I have been very frustrated with the SS process since I have worked since the age of 16. I do have a lawyer who is suppose to help me. I have not given up yet so I thank you again for supporting those of us who are in this situation. Do you know of any information relating to ICD's and Pacemaker/Defibrillators and Social Security Disability rules?

Thanks so much for your kind words. I am sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Social Security disability process, which unfortunately is quite common. By your description, your condition should qualify for Social Security disability, at least based on the medical issues. SSA will also assess non-medical issues, including your financial situation. The "4.05 Recurrent Arrhythmias" section contains information on how SSA looks at defibrillators. Best wishes to you and take care.
